» What is data transfer, or "bandwidth", and how is it measured?
Data transfer, sometimes referred to as "bandwidth", refers to the total amount of network traffic generated by your site.
This includes both incoming and outgoing traffic from all forms of account access including HTTP (web), FTP, e-mail and just about any other form of access to your account.

In most cases, all kinds of access other than outgoing data transfer for HTTP (web) access are relatively insignificant.

As an example, and simplifying things slightly, if your home page was a 30KB .html file and it contained 10 .gif images each of which was 5KB, then each time a visitor viewed your home page our server would need to transfer 80KB of information to the Internet.

The data transfer allowances included with our plans vary from a generous 1000 MB per month (Basic Plan) up to a massive 5000 MB per month (Professional Plan).
One megabyte (MB) of data transfer is equivalent to 1024 kilobytes (KB) of information, so even our smallest plan allows for 1000 MB = 1000x1024 KB = 1,024,000 KB of data transfer each month. This is enough for a massive 51,200 20KB page views per month, with even our smallest plan.

The data transfer usage displayed in your Control Panel is a useful rough guide to your true data transfer. However, this figure is necessarily only an approximate measure of just your outgoing data transfer and excludes a number of contributions to data transfer which are more difficult to measure in real time. The Control Panel measures your data transfer as accurately as possible without using excessive server resources in actually performing the measurement. For this reason, your actual total data transfer for a given month will tend to exceed the figure displayed in your Control Panel to some extent.
